The joint project by MED-EL and LearnChamp won bronze in the Best Extended Enterprise Solution category at the 2026 Totara Awards. The award recognizes the MED-EL Academy, a learning platform that brings internal and external audiences worldwide together in a single, multilingual environment.
What was the project about?
MED-EL is a global leader in hearing solutions. The challenge was the diversity of its audiences: employees, hearing healthcare professionals, implant recipients, and their caregivers all have very different needs, from how they register to how they navigate content and access their own learning history.
Add to that a global reach. Users are based in countries such as China, Bangladesh, and Russia, working with different devices, varying internet availability, and multiple languages. What was needed was a learning platform that is fully responsive, easy to use, and flexible.
What the platform delivers
Together with LearnChamp, the Academy was built on Totara Learn and integrated into the myMED-EL portal. Using OAuth2 and the web API, the team created a seamless single sign-on: end users access every offering through one centrally managed account. The platform is hosted on a scalable AWS environment and available worldwide.
Content is served to the right audience in the right language, currently in six languages with more in preparation. An integration of Totara, JWPlayer, and AWS provides secure video streaming to current standards. Courses, seminars, and live webinars are supported alongside quizzes, feedback, and certificates matched to the corporate identity. Because the platform requires only minimal changes to the core code, it stays easy to update and benefits continuously from new Totara features.
